Slideshow: Changing Landscapes

BY ALBA MORA // By the turn of the century Emeryville was known as “The Butchertown” because of the number of slaughterhouses in the city limits. In the 1920s it was known as “The Rottenest City” on the coast due to an excess of gambling salons. From there, warehouses popped up in the city in the 1940s. Those were later converted to artist loft communes in the early 1970s. Nowadays newcomers like Pixar, IKEA and the condos on Hubbard Street are shaping the current scenery.

Changing Landscapes is a slideshow documenting what’s been called Emeryville’s rebirth.

The transition is amazing. Someone can pick up where this left off in another century if we aren’t living on another planet by then. The sound gives it a little bit of a weird feeling. Perfect. time keeps on tickin’ …tickin’…tickin’… into the future”

Great work. Really demonstrates what zoning and time can do. Also shows that you don’t necessarily need voices in a slide show! We should link to this in our Eastern Plan Development stories. Best, lc
